Only in Saudi Arabia: The culture of partitions in restaurants and coffee shops. Have I told you how much I hate partitions? I hate them, I hate them! What’s the point of going out if you will stay enclosed in a cell smaller than a typical cubicle? Some people would say they like partitions because they provide privacy. Well, if you are looking for some privacy, go to some quiet classy place, and if someone violated your privacy, just let me know. I’ll come right away, and I’ll handle the situation. Inta tetdallal!

It is a Shame

Husein Shubukshi wrote about the three different opinions of three members of the Saudi royal family regarding the issue of women’s driving, and he seemed to be happy about that because he thinks it reflects the diversity in the Saudi society. Before reading Shubukshi’s column, I had read two of the three opinions.

Today, I read the third one. It was written by Prince Mamdouh Bin Abdul Aziz, and he is against the right of women to drive. I respect all opinions, and I’m sure a part of the society would agree with Prince Mamdouh’s point of view. However, I was surprised by the level of discussion between Prince Mamdouh and a Saudi journalist who disagreed with him. The reply of the prince included a personal attack, and calling names!

Sahar al-Ramlawi thinks our legal system “should consider introducing community service and open the way for courts to order offenders involved in minor crimes to do this kind of service instead of sentencing them to prison.” I think it should, but I don’t think they would. The officials of our legal system think it is perfect, and they won’t change a thing. But I’m glad the writer had the courage to suggest this.
