I have been using the Ubuntu Linux Live CD for a couple of days now, and what I can say is that I really like it. It is easy to use, the interface is not very different from what I’m used to, and it is even more elegant and stylish than Windows. So far, almost everything works fine, except for the modem (is this a common problem?), but I think I can easily fix this when I do the full install. The first thing I will do after finishing my final exams is to wipe Windows away from my machine, and get Linux fully installed.

  1. Glad that you like Linux. I’ve been using Linux for many years now. I tried the Kubunto Live CD too. My modem was detected without any problems. I have a broadcom modem. There not than many programs on the live CD though. I guess the full distribution has much more programs.

I recommend that you keep windows on your computer. You will have to repartityion oyur hard drive though and get a dual boot system with both Linux and Windows on it. You will still need windows, unfortuanately, to do some tasks, especially video streaming. Some web sites can only be viewed by IE, but this situation is changing.

Good luck and let us hear about your Linux experience.

    Spiderman.

  2. Ubuntoo is definitely a great OS. I enjoy using it as well. I haven’t been brave enough to totally wipe away Windows though. I always find myself needing to use it for some purpose or another. I just use a dual-boot system to get around that. Good luck with the transition! I wish you the best in it.

  3. Good for you! I was in a slump for a long time with Linux distros. Since Redhat went to the subscription route, and Fedora lost steam, I couldn’t find a good distro.

Ubuntu has been working great for me too for the last year or so. Getting it to work on a Mac Mini (a nice machine in itself) was easy and made for an awesome experience, and not too expensive either. ;)

    Enjoy!

  4. Linux is indeed a great choice and Ubuntu is a good start. I’m a Fedora guy myself but I have about 11 distros lying around here, installed and tried out each and every one of them (settled down to Fedora and FreeBSD for now).
Dialup modems are somehow often a problem when it comes to Linux. Some of them are detected, some have yet to be detected and some simply won’t work. I once couldn’t get the modem on a friend’s new Linux box to work if my life depended on it.
I recommend you leave Windows on for the moment. After a certain period of constant Linux usage you’ll have gotten used to it and can wipe scum.. eerr Windows off your drive for good..

    Cheers!

  5. System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

    mplayer
    w32codecs
    mozilla-mplayer

Hardware modems seem to work fine under Linux – winmodems may tend to barf.

  6. Ubuntu is good but KDE (Kubuntu/other distro) is better, gnome is too mac like for me – I like terminals and the good development tools too much :)
