Mohammed Jazairy, editor of the youth column in Asharq Al-Awsat, tells us the other side of the story about what happened in the meeting of Karen Hughes with the students of Dar Al-Hikma College for Girls. “Unfortunately, most of the opinions expressed by the girls were not honest. They are not happy, and they don’t deny their right to drive. The only explanation for their attitude is because Hughes is American,” Ghadeer Atallah, 21, said.
Jazairy says he was surprised that the high level of education the students receive, and the openness of their social life, did not allow them to be subjective and rational in front of the foreign visitors and the international media.
oh, I don’t know, maybe unlike you they actually decided to stand up for their country?
maybe they decided they weren’t going to take bullshit from that american bitch?
Maybe unlike you they try to give our country a face rather than rip and tear it in front of the U.S. media?
it’s good to see that some still care.
It’s the same old story. Listen, dear. Standing up for your country does not mean closing your eyes when there is something wrong, and saying that everything is fine. Giving a face that is false about my country is not my job, and it will never be. Why? Because I care about my country, and want it to become a better place.
Theres a difference, You don’t have to go out and tell the american all our troubles, that’s not closing your eyes that is standing up.
Giving the face that the people of the country will not take shit from some american lady is a good thing.
And if you care so much about your country why the fuck do you dkeep writing shit in english? not much of an audience grabber, and also, you would expose saudi arabia to those who want to do it harm.
if you care about your country, you will deal with it from the inside and not go out arms waving telling every westerner “HEY LOOK AT US! WE ARE STUPID!WE LOVE AMERIKA! INVADE US! YAY!”
or something like that.
Just because we hate/don’t agree with the American policy, that does not mean to contradict with ourselves. We are in desperate need for reforms, whether America told us or not. Americans cannot impose their vision on us, because change comes from inside.
Let’s remember that Hughes have come here to listen, and not to tell us what to do. I think it was fair enough for everybody that she listened to both parties; those, like you and the Dar Al-Hikma girls, who are happy with the status quo, and those, like me and others, who thrive for change and progress.
We all love this country, and we are proud to belong to it. And even if we disagree about how to look at things, this gives no one the right to accuse the other with disloyalty.
