This column by Khaled Batarafi is a highly recommended read for everyone. I hate the generalization he makes when he tries to talk about the whole Arab World instead if only talking about Saudi Arabia, but I think it was clear that he meant Saudis. I would provide some parts that I liked the most, but I won’t because I prefer that you all go and read the whole column.

I dont think he is saying anything wrong here. Keep in mind he is talking about his school days when he was not allowed to make choices, so that must have been long time ago. We have the freedom to make choices today. I also remember when I went to the Islamic school in Jeddah, I was not allowed to ask question and to just accept things as they are. ON a larger scale, the government would also restrict what kind of books and tv programs shuold be allowed. They were controlling the people’s thoughts. A great book to read would be Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent. I cannot speak for other Gulf countries, but certainly, at one time in Saudi, there were no freedom of choice, like there is today!
