The issue of women’s driving is getting more attention day after day. Today, Arab News reported that two “Saudi women journalists have submitted a petition in support of women driving to the Kingdom’s National Association for Human Rights.” The petition, submitted by the journalists who requested anonymity, is signed by 102 Saudi men and women of different background and professions, and come from different parts of the Kingdom.
The idea of the petition came after a statement by the interior minister who said that this issue is a social matter which has no priority at the present time. One of the journalists said “she had a great deal of respect” for Dr. Mohammed Al-Zulfa, the Shoura Council member who raised the issue for discussion in the council last month.
This petition repeats the same reasons Dr. Al-Zulfa was talking about, that “many Saudi families cannot afford to pay for a driver” and “the dangers of foreign drivers who learn the most private family details,” and “may exceed their responsibilities and may, in some cases, commit various crimes.”
Hamad Al-Majed, the association’s deputy head, said the association will discuss the petition next week. I want to know what this governmental organization has to say on this matter. Are they going to take Dr. Al-Zulfa’s side, or they will simply take the safe road and take Prince Naif’s side?
This is no doubt a thorny issue. I hope common sense prevails over whatever decision is made. I just know that women driving is not un-islamic, but a God given right to the women which they are denied. We all know women drive in villages and inside compounds, like Aramco. I even see Saudi women driving inside my compound! Sure, things will be tricky in the beginning, but the noise will die down once people get used to seeing women drive in the cities!

I feel that women should be able to drive in Saudi. I hear that they drive in several muslim nations including Afghanistan, Iran, and others. Many Saudi Women do drive themselves when they visit countries that allow them to drive.
Also, I do not think Women Driving does any harm, if anything good things will come of it. Just look at the majority of the countries of the world that allow it from Brittan, to the USA, to Mexico, to Brazil, to many many others. In fact, the majority of the worlds nations allow Women to Drive.
If they are concerned about preserving family structure, I think they should use other incenttives to encourage marriage, such as less taxes, making houses affordable to families, and create a community that encourages family life. I think there is no correlation between women who drive and unsuccessful families.q
I think that it is not really necessary for women to drive. You see, in many countries car accidents is because of women, an if women are not allowed to drive the number of car accidents would decrease.
On the other hand, I think it is good for Saudi women too. Saudi women are living a comfortable life. In Saudi, every woman has a driver, sometimes payed and sometimes one of her male relatives.
I believe that women should be allowed to drive a car. If women can work and study, then they should be allowed to drive a car too. there are 50 muslim states in the world, and all of them allow women to drive. So I do not believe that it is an islamic value to deny women the right to drive the car, otherwise there will be 50 unislamic-muslim states, which is not true. I also believe the the ecconomic and social complications and consequences of having a driver for every women is too much. If previnting women from driving is about protecting them and maintaining their privacy, then the presence of foreighn drivers violates this very same purpose it tries to serve. I really hope that someone will take this issue too seriously and consider reviewing the logic behaind preventing women from driving. Protecting the society and its values have NOTHING to do with previnting women from driving their own cars.
Respect for the views of everyone, but I am not of the supporters of this idea is a very sensitive subject and it is not reasonable to believe that the Saudi society, to become accustomed to see Saudi women driving, and assume the leadership of Saudi women started and how the number of accidents per day in 2008, the number of car accidents 6000 due to deceased in the proportion of the deceased in 2009, and how, if women are beginning to command
All the thanks and respect to you ..
