Raid Qusti is daydreaming, and wondering why all foreigners still remain outside Saudi mainstream. Usually, such stories tend to blame Saudis for not being friendly and welocming to foreigner. This time, Qusti blames foreigner for isolating themselves in compounds. “You’re not really living somewhere if you do not speak the language of the host country, avoid mingling with locals, do not see other parts of the country, and do not make local friends,” he says. Good point.

  1. It goes both ways.

I think the number one reason behind foreign saudi born kids not being able to speak arabic is the fact that they don’t go to an arabic medium school and usually go to their own country’s embassy school or some american/brit school. As a result, they really have no interaction with saudis in arabic.

I did get to know saudis but we always spoke in english.

If the saudi gov allowed foreigners to get admission in their schools..non-saudi kids would be obligated to learn arabic.

Schools are where kids grow up basically…. go to Arabic schools.. you get kids who eat, sleep, talk arabic….. go to foreign schools where the medium of instruction is english.. you get kids who are fluent in english.

  2. One step in the right direction would be for the government to attempt to recruit only Muslims for available positions. There are few, if any jobs that cannot be performed by a Muslim. My experience is that Muslims adapt to the culture and blend much better than non-Muslims anyway, so why hire non-Muslims for anything?

As far as schools go, here in Qatar the national schools are scheduled to open to foreigners very soon. We’ll see how it turns out inshAllah. As it is now, some, but relatively few of us have our kids in Arabic language schools (Mine goes to Arabic school).
