On a recent event in the Literature Club of Jeddah, commenting on a paper named “The message of enlightenment in drama, arts, radio and television in Saudi Arabia” presented by the Saudi novelist Mahmoud Traori, a female participant in the discussion followed the keynote said: “Instead of women, Shakespeare used young boys dressed in women clothes to play womens’ roles. Why can’t we do the same thing?”
Can this question sounds any more stupid?
She may have a point you know; if you can’t let women act in dramas, you might as well let the men do the women’s role. I jjust watched a movie last week called Stage Beauty, which is set in England in 1600s. It is based on a true story about a man who plays the role of a woman on live theatre. He is so popular, but then the king gives the permission that women can act on stage, and so this man loses his power to act as a woman and so the story goes on. I know that in schools, the guys and girl do dress up and play the opposite gender. I remember my sister who had friends dressed up as men, in a thobe and moustache to act in their school play!
