I was expecting this. The usually-boring newspaper…

I was expecting this. The usually-boring newspaper of the university was out this morning carrying several letters written by students about the reality show Star Academy. It is the same old story, but the funny thing this time is that none of the letters mentions the name of the Saudi winner, while one of them calls the show “Shame Academy.” Another student was objecting about the “naked” girls in the audience who covered themselves with the Saudi flag. Yeah, for someone who used to see women covered from head to toe, these girls, wearing blue jeans and T-shirts, were practically naked.

Farah, have you read the newspaper? What do you think?

  1. Oh my gosh Ahmed, my thoughts exactly! This is actually the first time I pick it up. (yeah, so I’m not too into extracurricular activities, so shoot me!) I only picked this issue up, however, because one of my friend’s at the College of Languages and Translation had written a poem, and she was so excited that I read it (check it out p.11, her name’s Asiah)Anywho, but oh my gosh what is up with the people on p.6? They seriously need to lighten up! I just had to laugh out loud at the “almujtama3 al baheemy al safel!”.. That Shame Academy guy was just too retarded to be taken seriously, I’m sorry. That other guy though, that Mr. “I’m civilized so allow me to criticize whomever I choose to criticize” was supposedly all sophisticated. Civilization is not poking fun of those who assume they are civilized. It’s accepting them and shutting the heck up. Also, he asks why Saudis of the rest of the Arab world are the only ones who are around on TV? I’m no professional but I can promise you it’s neither unconsciousness nor oblivion! I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again, it’s called “repression!”
We are such hypocrites, sometimes. We condemn the show over and over again and yet it’s the only thing on our tongues.. (And press! how many letters were there regarding the same topic? Four?!) sheesh.

This whole newsletter is so fake. I don’t think it represents KSU-ers whatsoever.
Ahmed do you read this weekly?
    Quite frankly it’s crap press!

  2. What faroooha said about hypocrisy, I find that a lot here. So many people are anti americans, and spew a lot of hatred for the americans, and you see them sipping a latte cappucino at Starbucks! Isn’t that hypocrisy? lol! :)

  3. People keep putting into my hand that most Saudies are anti-american, but you can find them enjoying some American products. Well I never really met anyone that was anti-american (Except for a couple of the people that only rely on one sided news, and those don’t shop from anything that comes from America) they love the American people, and what the country has to offer, it’s one thing to be against the American goverment and another thing to be against the American life style.

  4. every thing they wrote about Star Academy is simply a reiteration of the old hackneyed theory of ‘we are so virtuious and idealsitc to watch such show’..while in truth they can’t accept that most people watched and loved the show..because there is no better alternative.Wake up and smell the arabic coffee Saudies. We are not better than any other society.

  5. I read it for fun. I don’t know why, but such things makes me laugh out loud. If you are, or your friend for that matter, interested in reading Arabic stuff, please check out my Arabic blog, where I write short stories, poems, and other random things in Arabic

  6. Ahmed,

Now you are forcing me to learn arabic faster and quicker…I so want to read your arabic blog as well the articles you put here. I may have to get someone who can read arabic for me for the time being!

    Mansur

  7. Interesting, good blog by the way. Different cultures need to start to realise that we are just that, different… not to think our way is better than theirs. Its hard I know but we dont even try to make this ideal a part of our culture, well we sort of do now with political correctness I suppose but thats another extreme..
