More terrifying stories from the Holy Mosque in Makkah. I don’t know about you guys, but I think those Wahabbis are really hijacking Islam.

Hey Ahmed,
I wrote an article last week on the same issue, citing the article from Arab News written by Lubna Hussain. She went through the same “cover your face” ordeal. I myself have been personally told by the religious police to do several things on so many occasions.
More than anything, it is sad.
Ok, the thing is that I can understand why these people behave this way, but what about someone who is coming from abroad. What impression will they get when they encounter such people? I think for two women to write on the same topic within a span of a week goes to show that something is wrong here. It is a sad thing that people have to face this, and I hope and pray that these so called “guardians of the Holy Mosque” would be more tolerant, well spoken, kind and patient with the pilgrims. if it is such a big deal for the women to cover their faces, why don’t they just put a BIG sign at the entrance saying “Women, cover your faces please!”
See, it doesn’t make sense too that these “guardians” would do selective preaching. If the women in question points out to some other women with uncovered faces, these “guardians” would not bother, but choose to pick on the women in question. Plus, the books available right outside of the mosque says that women should not cover her face. There is a book, which I have heard a lot about, called The Wahabbi Myth….has anyone read that? It’s not available here, for understandable reasons, but I am getting one from the UK soon! Sorry for writing a long comment.

The Wahhabists are really the source of negative Muslim stereotypes. Whenever conservative politicians in the West speak of radical Islam or even Islam in general (sadly) they speak of the extreme cases of Islam, like the Wahhabists. I don’t even consider these people Muslims. I am not a Muslim, but from what I know of Islam (and common sense) these people are crazy zealots and don’t deserve to even be discussed as Muslims.
These people are the reason there are so many negative Muslim stereotypes in the West.
When women are forced to cover, it often signifies an atmosphere of uncivilized behavior (by men, not women). And there could be an insinuation of potential criminality or dangerous surroundings.
But then why should the women be forced to cover when it’s the men who are behaving badly?
