I don’t think it is weird. I think what’s happening is a natural progression as after the huge success of channel 2, media players realized that Western programs are popular in the Arab world, especially among the Arab youth who constitute the majority of the population.
Actually, I don’t think the media war is only over western entertainment.
The war still rages on over Arabic entertainment with Arab channels producing and fighting over Arabic series, shows and movies.
The war between Arab news channels still goes on too.
And in all of this there are the channels that are trying to cater for a younger audience who are more interested in western entertainment.
Try to look at it as a whole. Every channel competes for more market share between it’s target audience whether it’s for Arabic or Western entertainment.
