Football Propaganda

According to Arab News, the Saudi Football Federation has decided that the proceeds of the matches of the Kingdom’s first national football team in the Asian elimination round of the 2006 World Cup be donated to the tsunami victims. Sounds nice, right? However, I think it’s just funny.

I have been following our national team for about a decade, and I can tell you for sure that Saudis now are less interested in the national team’s matches more than anytime in the past. Due to mismanagement, low performances and poor marketing, Saudis don’t go to watch football in stadium anymore. They prefer to stay home, watch the match on TV, and if it gets boring, and it always does, they can easily change the channel or simply turn off the TV. So, I guess the final result will be zero worth of donation.

  1. Interesting, some of the NBA players did a similar thing. They gave away $1000 for each score they made. The total was $208000

  2. Some of the presidents of football clubs here also did a similar thing, but I can’t recall any numbers. I’m bad when it comes to numbers.
